Gentle Shepherd Farms Puppy Contract

This contract specifically explains the guarantees that come with a pet quality puppy purchased from our farm. Your puppy is guaranteed to be in good health at the time of sale and has been inoculated and de-wormed as described in the packet you will receive at the time of your puppy pickup. Your puppy will have a health certificate from our Veterinarian, prior to your puppy leaving our farm. Your puppy should be taken to your vet within 72 hours of its pickup for an examination. If there is a problem, it should be reported immediately to us. Please have your veterinarian fill out the form enclosed in your packet stating the problem and his/her recommendations. The vaccination your puppy received did not include lepto. Please discuss with your vet whether he/she recommends vaccination for lepto. Your puppy will require ongoing vaccinations. We recommend revaccination for parvo/distemper combination shot at 12 and 16 weeks. In New York State, rabies shots are mandatory at 12 weeks of age. We also recommend that your dog receive a monthly  heartworm preventative as directed by your veterinarian. Please take a stool sample with you to your first vet appointment. Although your puppy has been de-wormed on a regular basis, it is important to check for internal parasites once the puppy is away from its littermates. It is also imperative that as a dog owner you license your puppy with the appropriate municipalities. Always be a responsible dog owner and obey all local laws for leashes and sanitation.

Your puppy has been micro chipped for its protection and identification. We have made the decision to micro chip to insure your puppy’s safe return and positive identification should he/she be lost or stolen. Included in your puppy packet, you will find a brochure explaining how the micro chip works. Please register your microchip as soon as possible. By having our farm as your back up contact, we are able to make safety arrangements for your puppy if you can not be immediately reached.

We, the seller, assume no responsibility for veterinary bills, medical expenses or accidental death of your puppy. If your puppy is found to have hip dysplasia by the age of 2 years, it may be returned along with the x-rays and grading from OFA for a replacement puppy from the next available litter. If your puppy should be found to be affected with CEA/CH, you may return it with the results from Optigen for a replacement puppy from the next available litter.

All of our puppies are registered with the American Border Collie Association. Unless prior arrangements have been made, all puppies are registered with a non-breeding status. If at age 2, you desire to breed your dog and have documentation from a licensed veterinarian stating your dog is suitable for breeding and breeding it would be for the betterment of the breed, Gentle Shepherd Farms will file the appropriate forms with ABCA to lift the non-breeding status of your dog. Gentle Shepherd Farms puppies are currently eligible to be registered with AKC although we do not complete this process for you.  Your ABCA registration is included in the price of your puppy. If you register your Border Collie with AKC and attain a Championship in Conformation, the American Border Collie Association will automatically void your ABCA registration papers for your dog and any of its offspring.

We at Gentle Shepherd Farms take the responsibility for our Border Collies very seriously. If at any time during your dog’s life you become unable or unwilling to care for your dog, please return him/her to our farm. We take life long responsibility for the lives we have brought into the world. We want to do everything we can to insure they have a long and healthy life. We do not want our puppies/dogs to end up in rescue. We are willing to take them back and either have them live out their life here or re-home them if a suitable home is found and it is appropriate. The adoption fee for your puppy is non-refundable.

We highly recommend puppy obedience classes for all of our puppies. This is an excellent time for you and your dog and your family to bond and learn together. Please do not hesitate to call or e-mail us with any questions you have. We are here for you for the life of your dog. We will work with you to find any answers you may need.

Most of all, enjoy your puppy. You are embarking upon a long term friendship that will be so rewarding. We always love to receive pictures of our puppies and notes to know how they are doing. We look forward to hearing from you.

We are not a pet dealer in the State of New York, as we are not required to be licensed due to the small number of puppies we produce each year. We pride ourselves in a few, high quality puppies, rather than a large number of average puppies. However, we do provide our purchasers with all of the documentation of the rights of buyers in New York so that you may be educated about what your rights are as puppy purchasers under New York State Law. Gentle Shepherd Farms strives to produce only the highest quality puppies with sound minds and bodies that will be an asset to the breed as a whole. We are proud that you have chosen us to find the newest member of your family.
